My cousin Julio was shot to death two nights ago. It won’t make the news. He was 21 years old.
I don’t know any of the details surrounding his early demise. His father, my cousin Mitchell, Jr., left Georgia for Texas to pick up Julio’s body and bring him home. I spoke with him this morning. He is sad. I feel bad for him.
Some people will assume that Julio was somehow the cause of his own death. Simply being a young man of color makes him less of a victim. The NRA has yet to respond.
I will never trust a politician who advocates on behalf of gun lobbyists and warmongers. I will never be a member of any group that suggests that somehow we as a nation should feel safer with less gun control. I will never vote Republican.
My cousin and so many other citizens of this great nation may still be alive if there were less access to guns. Who knows? Maybe if we teach people to think and not react, the world would be a better place.
Infinite Intelligence. Divine Mother. Please guide Julio’s soul on his next journey. Please bless his parents and our family in our realization of his transition. We Thank You for your many gifts, miracles and blessing.
Ashe. Amen. And so it is.
